Forests have long been steeped in legends and are the setting for many fairy tales. Below is a list of forests that ordinary people avoid, and daredevils plunge into the thickets to tickle their nerves.

Crooked Forest, Poland
There is a significant number of pine trees growing in the forest, their trunks resemble giant coiled snakes due to the curvature of 90 degrees. All pine trees face north and are surrounded by ordinary trees. Locals explain this phenomenon by special winds, and they also say that in 1930 400 pine trees were planted here to collect curved wood for boats, but this is just an assumption, the final version is unknown.

Forest of bloody trees, South Africa
Pterocarpus is a yew tree that exudes red sap. Split trunks and damaged branches look spectacular, turning the forest into a place of bloody carnage.

Hoia Bachu, Romania
Locals try not to go to the forest, because they consider it an analogue of the Bermuda Triangle. After being in the thickets, people feel dizzy, have migraines and burns. Hoya Bachu is famous for the clearing, which has a perfectly flat circle shape and attracts alien seekers.

Aokigahara forest, Japan
Compasses do not work here and the silence is frightening. The trees grow densely, not allowing the sun’s rays to get inside, so there is darkness in the forest around the clock.
Aokigahara is known as the forest of suicides.

In the Middle Ages, due to lack of food, poor people brought old relatives here and left them to die. Every year about a hundred people are found in the forest who decided to commit suicide, most often it happens at night. The fact that the compass does not work indicates a geomagnetic anomaly. Most likely, it affects vulnerable people. In front of the forest, there is a sign where local authorities remind that life is a priceless gift and the helpline number is indicated. This place is repeatedly mentioned in books and films.

Heizhu, China
A forest of black bamboo, where accidents happen and people disappear without a trace in the dense fog. It is not known where their belongings and bodies go. The plane that crashed in 1950 was never found here. Scientists have found a bunch of strange factors that explain the anomalies: in this place decaying plants that emit toxic substances; the forest has a unique structure of geological rocks and geomagnetic radiation.

Sacred forest, Italy
In the city of Bomarzo there is an eerie park called “Sacred Forest”. There are about thirty sculptures and structures related to mythology: a dragon dog, an elephant eating a man and other monsters. All these are Pierre Orsini’s ideas dedicated to his deceased wife.

Since Orsini’s relatives did not look after the park, the sculptures were overgrown with moss, and the park itself acquired an ominous look. Despite the stories about evil spirits, it inspired Salvador Dali himself.

Black Forest, Germany
The dense and gloomy Black Forest is actually not so terrifying. But it is the one that appears in the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. The Black Forest is shrouded in secrets and legends, so people imagine fairies or other strange creatures in the darkness of the ancient forest.

Rata Forest, New Zealand
The trees seem to be the gates to the forest, or close it from strangers. This strange sight at night can turn into huge paws with claws that will try to grab you.

Goblin forest, New Zealand
The trees here are overgrown with moss, it gives them an otherworldly look or similarity to creatures of another dimension. Moss also sometimes glows in the dark. Imagine the sight when dense fog covers the Goblin Forest.

Forest of knives, Madagascar
It is actually called Tsingy de Bemarkha. This is not a standard forest of trees, because instead of them there are limestone rocks. They reach 70 cm in height, have a sharp elongated shape. From the height it seems as if someone pushed knives into the ground.
